SATELLITE ESTIMATES OF NET PRIMARY PRODUCTION, OR THE NET FIXATION RATE OF INORGANIC CARBON BY PHYTOPLANKTON, HAVE A HISTORY DATING BACK TO 1978 WITH THE LAUNCH OF THE COASTAL ZONE COLOR SCANNER MISSION. A RELATED PARAMETER, NET COMMUNITY PRODUCTIVITY (NCP) CONTAINS INFORMATION ABOUT THE RATE OF NET CARBON PROCESSING BY BOTH THE AUTOTROPHIC AND HETEROTROPHIC COMMUNITIES, AND IS PERHAPS A MORE USEFUL PARAMETER FOR DESCRIBING OCEAN CARBON DYNAMICS AT ALL SPATIAL SCALES. ESTIMATES OF NCP FROM SPACE ARE CHALLENGING EVEN IN NON COMPLEX CASE 1 WATER WHERE COLOR IS DOMINATED BY THE GROWTH AND DECAY OF PHYTOPLANKTON. THIS CHALLENGE IS MADE MORE DIFFICULT IN OPTICALLY COMPLEX AND DYNAMIC COASTAL WATERS. ONE PROMISING METHOD USED TO ESTIMATE NCP INVOLVES AN ACCOUNTING OF THE TIME DERIVATIVE OF REMOTELY SENSED PARTICULATE CARBON INVENTORIES AS STUDIED WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF A FLOWING WATER PARCELS. SUCH METHODS ARE NOT PRESENTLY USED DUE IN PART TO THE POOR TEMPORAL FREQUENCY OF POLAR ORBITING OCEAN COLOR SENSORS. GEOSTATIONARY OCEAN COLOR SENSORS SUCH AS THE GEOSTATIONARY OCEAN COLOR IMAGER (GOCI) OR A MORE SOPHISTICATED HYPERSPECTRAL SENSOR SIMILAR TO THAT PROPOSED TO FLY DURING THE NASA GEO CAPE MISSION, OPEN UP NEW POSSIBILITIES FOR NCP RETRIEVALS BY OFFERING THE MULTIPLE DAILY VIEWING REQUIRED TO TRACK WATER MASSES AND THEIR CONSTITUENT LOADS.

NASA S ONGOING MAGNETOSPHERIC MULTISCALE (MMS) MISSION IS DESIGNED TO RESOLVE THE DIFFUSION SCALE PHYSICS OF MAGNETIC RECONNECTION IN EARTH S MAGNETOSPHERE, WHICH CONTROLS THE TRANSPORT OF PLASMAS AND THE RELEASE OF MAGNETIC ENERGY. PARTICLE-IN-CELL (PIC) SIMULATIONS NOWADAYS HAVE DEMONSTRATED THE CAPABILITY OF CAPTURING THE FULLY KINETIC NATURE OF RECONNECTION AND HAD BEEN SUCCESSFULLY COMPARED WITH THE OBSERVATIONAL SIGNATURES OF RECONNECTION IN THE MAGNETOPAUSE, MAGNETOTAIL AND THE SOLAR WINDS. THESE SIMULATIONS NOT ONLY HELP INTERPRET THE IN-SITU OBSERVATION BUT ALSO HELP STEER THE MISSION BY IDENTIFYING AND REFINING THE SCIENCE QUESTIONS. MY RESEARCH GROUP AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE WILL CARRY OUT A SERIES OF PIC SIMULATIONS TO EXPLORE THE PHYSICS OF MAGNETIC RECONNECTION IN COLLISIONLESS PLASMAS. TO PROVIDE TIMELY SUPPORT AND INPUT TO THE MMS MISSION, MY RESEARCH GROUP AT DARTMOUTH COLLEGE WILL HAVE A WEEKLY TELECOM WITH THE LEADER OF THE THEORY AND MODELING TEAM OF MMS, AS WELL AS REGULARLY JOIN THE FAST PARTICLE INSTRUMENT (FPI) AND MMS SCIENCE TELECOMS. G: GRANT FOR RESEARCH
THE OBJECTIVE OF THE PROPOSED WORK IS TO DEMONSTRATE THE SUITABILITY OF ARTIFICIAL SINGLE-CRYSTAL DIAMOND DETECTORS (SCDDS) FOR USE AS THE SCATTERING MEDIUM IN COMPTON TELESCOPES FOR MEDIUM-ENERGY GAMMA-RAY ASTRONOMY. SCDDS OFFER THE POSSIBILITY OF POSITION AND ENERGY RESOLUTION COMPARABLE TO THOSE OF SILICON SOLID-STATE DETECTORS (SSDS), COMBINED WITH EFFICIENCY AND TIMING RESOLUTION SO-FAR ONLY ACHIEVABLE USING FAST SCINTILLATORS. WHEN INTEGRATED WITH A CALORIMETER COMPOSED OF FAST INORGANIC SCINTILLATOR, SUCH AS CEBR3, READ OUT BY SILICON PHOTOMULTIPLIERS (SIPMS), SCDDS WILL ENABLE A COMPACT AND EFFICIENT COMPTON TELESCOPE USING TIME-OF-FLIGHT (TOF) DISCRIMINATION TO ACHIEVE LOW BACKGROUND AND HIGH SENSITIVITY. THIS DETECTOR DEVELOPMENT PROJECT WILL BE A COLLABORATION BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY OF NEW HAMPSHIRE (UNH) AND SOUTHWEST RESEARCH INSTITUTE (SWRI). THE PROPOSED WORK REPRESENTS AN INNOVATIVE COMBINATION OF DETECTOR TECHNOLOGIES ORIGINALLY CONCEIVED SEPARATELY FOR HIGH-ENERGY ASTRONOMY (FAST SCINTILLATORS READ OUT BY SIPMS; UNH) AND SPACE PLASMA/PARTICLE PHYSICS (SCDDS; SWRI). RECENTLY SWRI HAS DEMONSTRATED THAT SCDDS FABRICATED USING CHEMICAL VAPOR DEPOSITION (CVD) SHOW GOOD ENERGY RESOLUTION (~7 KEV FWHM), COMPARABLE TO SILICON SSDS, WITH MUCH FASTER TIME RESPONSE (~NS RISE TIME) DUE TO HIGHER ELECTRON/HOLE MOBILITIES. THEY ARE ALSO TEMPERATURE- AND LIGHT-INSENSITIVE, AND RADIATION HARD. IN ADDITION, DIAMOND IS LOW-Z, COMPOSED ENTIRELY OF CARBON, BUT RELATIVELY HIGH-DENSITY (3.5 G CM-3) COMPARED TO SILICON OR ORGANIC SCINTILLATOR. SCDDS ARE THEREFORE AN INTRIGUING POSSIBILITY FOR A NEW COMPTON SCATTERING ELEMENT: IF PATTERNED WITH ~MM-SIZED READOUT ELECTRODES AND COMBINED WITH A FAST INORGANIC SCINTILLATOR CALORIMETER, SCDDS COULD ENABLE A COMPACT BUT EFFICIENT COMPTON TELESCOPE WITH SUPERIOR ANGULAR AND ENERGY RESOLUTION, WHILE MAINTAINING TOF BACKGROUND REJECTION. SUCH AN INSTRUMENT OFFERS THE EXCITING POTENTIAL FOR UNPRECEDENTED SENSITIVITY, ESPECIALLY AT ENERGIES<1 - 2 MEV, ON A SMALL-SCALE MISSION UTILIZING RECENTLY AVAILABLE SMALLSAT BUSES (PAYLOAD MASS<100 KG). WE PROPOSE TO DEMONSTRATE THIS BY CONSTRUCTING AND TESTING A SMALL PROOF-OF-CONCEPT PROTOTYPE AND, BASED ON ITS PERFORMANCE, USING MONTE CARLO SIMULATIONS TO EXPLORE THE POSSIBILITIES OF FURTHERING MEV SCIENCE USING RELATIVELY SMALL-SCALE SPACE MISSIONS.
